Allergens are substances that can trigger an allergic reaction in some people's bodies. These substances are usually harmless to most people, but in sensitive individuals, the immune system overreacts, releasing histamine and other compounds that cause symptoms such as itching, sneezing, swelling and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
